The Internet is changing the world of journalism, publishing, the music industry, education, storytelling and moviemaking. Video capture and editing tools provide an opportunity for anyone to create, entertain and inform using video and audio. Machinima, originally used to capture video game playing, is used to facilitate teaching and learning prompting this year’s VWBPE (Virtual World Best Practices in Education) EDUmachinima Fest to expand and refine Machinima Contest categories from 4 general categories to 7 more specific categories. The categories for this year are:
- Be Epic! – a machinima inspired by the 2012 Conference Theme
- Virtual World Outreach – a depiction of why/how you are using virtual worlds in teaching and learning
- How-to/Instructional – teach something using machinima
- Educational – A machinima used for F2F, blended, or virtual classroom
- Teen – Student productions
- Digital Storytelling – A story in dialog or narrative
- Brave Beginner – Content is open to anything, new machinima artists
- Other
Submissions can range from a sophisticated work with virtual world actors, special effects, lighting nuances and multiple sound tracks to simple capture of a sequence to entertain, or inform. Regardless of the range of techniques used, creators are interpreting an idea and developing a product that may complete a learning cycle and possibly kick-start somebody else’s. This is an opportunity to share your learning and/or use of virtual environments, to highlight what you have found to be interesting, useful and …. did I mention fun?
This weekend could be the best time to dust off that machinima you worked on last year or the year before, make sure it is properly credited (provide attribution for public domain and Creative Commons material. Name the author and others who have contributed to the video) and formatted (Videos should be saved with the – resolution of 1280 x 720p and uploaded to YouTube), and submit to http://conf.vwbpe.org .
